“For each of them, pulling the arrow out of the buffalo meant different things,” Watkins says. Midway through Season 1, Autumn pulls out one of the arrows, and the finale sees Royal taking out the other one.Īgain, here, Watkins believes this plot development has more to do with the thematic differences between the characters than it is about shocking the audience. The series often hints at the two’s mysterious connection through unexplainable occurrences, one of them being the recurring appearance of a single buffalo with two arrows sticking out of its side. Royal and Autumn had always been at odds, with tensions rising to the point where they were trying to murder each other. In fact, she’s a time-traveling version of his granddaughter Amy (Olive Abercrombie), who we’ve seen as a child throughout the series. Other than learning Royal is a Kurt Vonnegut-esque accidental time traveler, the big twist in Outer Range is that the mysterious Autumn (Imogen Poots) is actually related to him. Royal (Josh Brolin) and Autumn (Imogen Poots) have a complex relationship, one that puts them on opposite paths by the end of Season 1. “We were all quite compelled by the idea of how to weave that into his character and throughout the arc, and how to reveal that at the end was a fun, tricky thing to do.” Autumn’s Revelation And so, he's a sort of cosmic drifter,” Watkins says. “A drifter, of course, is one of the biggest western narratives that we have in our cultural imaginations. Subverting time-travel tropes is one thing, but Outer Range is also disrupting tropes from westerns, too. Amazon Studiosīy the end of Season 1, we learn that Royal Abbott has all along been, as Watkins says, “the ultimate drifter.” As we’ve learned in the final two episodes, he was “born in the 1890s, emerged in the 1960s, and then tried to find his life in this contemporary world.”Īs Watkins explains, the concept for Royal - and the show more broadly - wasn’t about getting the audience to connect the dots of his time-travel journey. He’s skipping through the space-time continuum. Considering Rebecca had been secretly helping with Autumn's plan, it's likely that she will now take Amy away from the Abbotts and start telling her the secrets of the time travel.Royal (Josh Brolin) is riding more than just horses in Outer Range. Either way, Rebecca is now finally reunited with present-day Amy. It is also still a mystery whether Autumn first contacted her mother or if it was Rebecca who placed her daughter on that mission. However, it is still not clear if she had been hidden close to the Abbotts this whole time or if Rebecca herself had also time-traveled at some point. It's Rebecca who was Autumn's secret benefactor, and it can be assumed that, at least during the time Autumn was in town, Rebecca was also nearby. It turns out that Rebecca was very much alive, and the Outer Range season finale showed that she was working along with Autumn – the future version of her daughter. However, it was not until Autumn started mentioning Rebecca that it became clear that Amy's mother's disappearance was somehow connected to the mystery of the Void and the time travel. One of the biggest mysteries of Outer Range since the beginning of the series was what had happened to Rebecca, Perry's wife. Royal now knows that Autumn is his granddaughter and has taken her back home to heal her injuries. She also learned the truth about Josh Brolin's character being a time-traveler at some point and eventually went back in time to interfere with how her grandfather was, in a way, protecting the Void from outside influences. However, unlike Royal, she actually became obsessed with the concept of time and started to almost worship the Void. The definitive proof that Autumne was Amy from the future was the scar on her forehead, the exact same scar Amy had gotten at the end of Outer Range episode 6.Īt some point, Amy learned about the Void's history and its ability to time travel. The way Autumn addressed Royal as if she'd known him for a long time also supported that theory. Several elements already suggested that this was the case, such as the resemblance in how they look and Autumn's interest in the Abbott family and in Perry. Confirming one of the biggest Outer Range theories, Autumn was revealed to be Amy from the future.
